Hello! My name is Valerie, and I will be your guide on this magical journey of hops, malt, yeast and the assorted weird things craft brewers toss into their beers. I’m a native of Ottawa, Canada who is currently in grad school in Brooklyn. I’m still a bit of a beginner when it comes to the world of beer. Just a little over a year ago, I went out on a limb and tried an IPA from a craft brewery for the first time. It completely blew my mind. Why had no one told me that beer could be this complex and so damn tasty?
One month later – as fate would have it – I started dating a home brewer with dreams of opening his own brewery. His passion and dedication to his beverage of choice inspired me to dive headfirst into the world of beer. He has been a wonderful guide, convincing me to taste hundreds of beers in dozens of styles from breweries across Canada, the USA and more. In the summer of 2014, I worked at L’Autre Oeil, an amazing family-run pub that specializes in beers from all over the world, which broadened my horizons even more. Now, I’m striking out on my own in Brooklyn, where I often find myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of beer.
Slowly but surely, I’m becoming more knowledgeable about this fascinating world. Of course, I still have a lot to learn, which is why I have been proclaimed: THE BEER INTERN.
